Once again a group of hardy Minnesotan photo students traveled to the North Shore of MN to photograph this awesome landscape in the dead of winter.  This year the weather was a different from most winters.  We had an extended extreme cold snap in January, freezing over 90% of Lake Superior through Feb.  Our trip up there in mid February gave us photo opportunities that I’ve not seen in the 20 years of doing this workshop.   We were able to walk out on the lake to take photos of Split Rock Lighthouse from angles not normally seen.  The ice had frozen, broken, refrozen and left a landscape that kind of looked like a war zone. At Gooseberry Falls State Park, the ice was piled 8 feet high by the mouth of the Gooseberry River, again a rare site.  The temps were moderate, lows near zero, highs near 20 so we could stay out and photography for longer periods of time.   I think everyone had a great experience and came home with some “wall hangers”  Here is just a few shots from each of the participants.
