Training sessions in April
DCTC students and employees can access dozens of databases through the DCTC Library web site. State tax dollars pay for many of these databases, which are collectively known as ELM, the Electronic Library for Minnesota. ELM is one of several MINITEX Library Information Network programs.
MINITEX offers free web-based training on ELM databases from time to time. Here are some of the upcoming training sessions, as described on the MINITEX web site:
Gale K12 Resources and PowerSearch
This session covers the K12 resources available in ELM from Gale, including the Discovering Collection, Kids InfoBits, InfoTrac K12 editions, and Junior Reference Collection. This session will cover the new PowerSearch interface.

This one-hour webinar will look at the world’s largest academic multi-disciplinary database. Academic Search Premier provides full text for nearly 4,600 scholarly publications, including full text for more than 3,500 peer-reviewed journals.

Electronic Library for Minnesota provides quality online information resources to all Minnesota residents via their local libraries and the ELM Portal and MnLINK Gateway. ELM offers magazine, newspaper, and journal articles, reference sources, and electronic books appropriate for a variety of users. Currently, ELM has resources from EBSCO, Gale, ProQuest, OCLC, and NetLibrary. A reference librarian from MINITEX will provide an overview of ELM, including content, features, and access points.

Keeping Current with ProQuest Newsstand Complete: Using the Smart Search Feature
ProQuest Newsstand Complete offers access to over 350 newspapers (250 with full-text) which includes local, regional, state, national, and international new sources. This webinar will take a closer look at one of its searching features, Topics – powered by Smart Search. Join MINITEX Reference Services staff to discover how the Smart Search feature compares search terms to index terms and suggests topics, suggests options for narrowing search, and creates a “bread crumb trail.”
