  • Community College Poetry Day: April 1

The nation’s poet laureate, Kay Ryan, a former community college teacher, has launched a poetry initiative for two-year colleges. As part of the project, April 1 is designated as National Poetry Day on Community College Campuses.

A community college graduate herself, Ryan taught developmental reading and writing at the College of Marin, in California, while writing and eventually gaining national recognition for her poetry. She hopes that this initiative will help give community colleges the recognition and respect they deserve.

Apt timing, as the Obama administration has made community colleges a key part of the nation’s economic development plan. The recent overhaul of the student loan program calls for a $2 billion investment in community colleges. Something to celebrate! — maybe with a poem?

Speaking of which, the DCTC Library has recently acquired a book of poetry published by DCTC’s own Kathy Niebur!

To find thousands of trustworthy, information-packed websites worthy of being cited in a research paper, check out ipl2. It’s easy to find on any computer: you just type www.ipl.org in your search box. And it’s available on the free Internet: no log-in required.

Once there, you’ll see it’s a huge collection of websites selected by librarians for their trustworthiness and usefulness. You can find sites on ipl2 by subject area or keyword search. For those of you familiar with what was Librarians’ Internet Index (LII) — a resource we touted in library instruction sessions — ipl2 is the result of a merger between LII and Internet Public Library, which has long maintained excellent reference links.

It’s an excellent and easy way to find reliable web sources — many from government, universities, and associations — on a wide array of topics.
