…a “trend” develops over time due to circumstances – good or bad – that are present in society, such as a new decade or a catastrophe. For example, after the tragic events of 9-11-01, the popularity of the color “navy blue” increased and became prominent in fashion and consumer products. This was in response to society’s renewed patriotism as well as the need to feel secure, stable, and strong.
Since a trend develops over time, a trend can significantly impact our culture. In contrast, a “fad” develops quickly and ends quickly for no particular reason. Thus, a “fad” has little impact on our culture.
