Upward Bound celebrates growth, leadership, and possibility

The 2026 Spring Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 was more than just a celebration—it was a powerful reminder of what happens when students are given the opportunity, support, and belief they need to succeed. Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program that prepares high school students from low-income families and potential first-generation college students for higher education. Bringing together students, families, staff, and community members, this event recognized the remarkable journey of TRIO Upward Bound participants from both Inver Hills Community College and Dakota County Technical College and the bright futures they are stepping into. More than 110 people attended this event, including 36 TRIO students.

Support from Congresswoman Angie Craig

Upward Bound was honored to welcome special guest speaker Congresswoman Angie Craig to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and families.

Congresswoman Craig represents Minnesota’s Second Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives and is widely recognized for a commitment to public service, bipartisan collaboration, and advocacy for Minnesota students, families, and communities. She currently serves as Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee and has consistently worked to expand opportunities for people across the state.

Programs like TRIO Upward Bound exist because leaders at the federal level recognize that every young person and adult should have an equal opportunity to prepare for, attend, and graduate from college. It means a great deal to have elected officials who understand the importance of investing in students and supporting access to higher education.

A Community Rooted in Support

From the very beginning of the evening, gratitude set the tone. Families and community partners were recognized as essential pillars of the Upward Bound experience—encouraging students, showing up consistently, and helping them persevere through challenges.

This year was described as difficult and full of change. Yet, what stood out most was the resilience of the community. Students continued to show up for one another with kindness, patience, and encouragement—proving that Upward Bound is more than a college prep program. It’s a place where belonging and support thrive.

A Year of Experiences and Exploration

The ceremony highlighted a year filled with impactful experiences that helped students grow academically, socially, and personally.

During Summer 2025, students participated in a kickoff retreat, explored college campuses, took classes at DCTC, and traveled to Chicago—expanding both their academic skills and their sense of possibility.

Throughout the year, students continued to engage in:

  • Afterschool programming, where they explored budgeting, careers, and college preparation while building meaningful friendships
  • Saturday sessions, including immersive learning experiences like science museum visits
  • The Student Leadership Conference, where students built confidence, participated in breakout sessions, and connected with peers
  • Outdoor adventures (VOBS) like canoeing and rock climbing, where teamwork, perseverance, and growth were on full display

These shared experiences helped shape a supportive, vibrant community—one where students could challenge themselves, try new things, and grow together.

Honoring Achievement and Growth

A central part of the evening was recognizing student accomplishments across a variety of areas. Awards celebrated academic excellence, persistence, leadership, and community impact.

The Academic Superstar, ACT Bootcamp Completion, Rookie of the Year, Community Glue and Breakthrough awards each recognized and highlighted the many ways students contributed to and strengthened the Upward Bound community.

The TRIO Achiever Award: Excellence in Action

One of the most meaningful moments of the night was the presentation of the TRIO Achiever Awards.

This distinguished honor recognizes one senior from each high school who exemplifies the very best of Upward Bound—students who demonstrate dedication, leadership, and significant personal and academic growth.

Recipients are selected based on their consistent engagement, commitment to education, positive contributions to their communities, and the ways they reflect the transformative impact of the program.

These students are not only preparing to attend college in the fall—they are stepping forward as leaders shaped by their experiences. Each recipient also shares their story, reflecting on their journey and what lies ahead.

Congratulations to the 2026 TRIO Achiever Award recipients:

  • Jennifer Saidu (Burnsville High School)
  • Alessandra Valadez-Ochoa (Two Rivers High School)
  • Milo Yang (South St. Paul Secondary)

Student Voices at the Center

Throughout the evening, student voices played a central role in bringing the program’s impact to life. Speakers shared stories of growth, connection, and discovery—from learning new skills and exploring career paths to building friendships and overcoming challenges.

Their reflections highlighted a recurring theme: Upward Bound is not just about preparing for college—it’s about building confidence, finding your voice, and realizing your potential.

Looking Ahead: The Class of 2026

The ceremony concluded by honoring the senior class of 2026—a group of students ready to take the next step in their journeys. Surrounded by family, peers, and mentors, they were recognized for their accomplishments and celebrated for the paths they are about to pursue.

Their success stands as a testament to their hard work—and to the power of programs like TRIO Upward Bound to open doors and create opportunity.

A Celebration of Possibility

At its core, the Spring Awards Ceremony was a celebration of possibility. It showcased what happens when students are supported, challenged, and encouraged to dream bigger.

As one message echoed throughout the evening: education is not just about reaching a destination—it’s about becoming, belonging, and imagining a better future.
