As part of a combined effort to promote student success, Dakota County Technical College and Inver Hills Community College are now providing Genio Notes, a note-taking support application, free to all students.

Melissa Fletcher, director of educational access and disability resources at DCTC, reported that the Genio Notes app allows students to make audio recordings of lectures while adding notes or thoughts to the recordings in real time. Faculty have access to this technology to provide note-taking support for their courses.

Genio Notes can generate a transcript of the recording; students can then translate the transcript into other languages and use it to create quiz questions to boost their study skills. According to Genio, the app’s transcription and captions tools let students pick which language is being spoken. Although the app currently supports more than 30 languages, the Genio Note user interface is currently only available in English.

Allison Jenson, director of accessibility resources at Inver Hills, is leading the effort across both campuses. “Students can upload documents and slide decks to Genio Notes, and also add links and images to their note files,” Allison said. “Recordings taken in Genio Notes can be organized and assigned due dates to assist students with organization and task completion. These files can be accessed through the app or on a web browser. Genio Notes works online or offline on any device.”

“This approach may help students improve their study habits by allowing them to review key concepts both visually and audibly,” she said. “Genio Notes has been used by college students all over the world, and many students have increased their ability to master content while enhancing their confidence in the classroom.”

Genio Notes toolsGenio Notes is fairly user-friendly, but both campuses are looking at “how-to” workshops once fall semester 2025 is underway. Genio Notes will be offered with other note-taking strategies in collaboration with the Center for Student Success/Tutoring at DCTC.

The Genio Notes app is available now, but students will need to contact Melissa at DCTC or Allison at Inver Hills to set up the app. The college is working on creating an online link to the app before the semester begins on Monday, August 25.
