Event held on National Voter Registration Day
The Student Senate at Dakota County Technical College hosted an event on National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), Tuesday, September 19, 2023, to promote voter engagement. Alexis Nordling, student senate vice president, and Natasha Grad, student senate campus liaison, took the lead on planning and managing the promotion. LeadMN, the Minnesota public two-year college student association, partnered with the college to hold the event.
“Being able to contribute to the promotion of voting opportunities within my local DCTC community was a profoundly meaningful experience,” Natasha said. “Personally, it had a significant impact on me to be part of the effort that allows my peers to engage in this crucial American privilege. Ensuring that events like this take place on campus is of utmost importance in ensuring that fellow students can readily exercise their voting rights.”
“National voter registration day made democracy more accessible to our students of all ages and backgrounds at DCTC,” Alexis said. “We on the Student Senate had plenty of support from the faculty and staff at the school, as well as organizations such LeadMN and other members of our community.”
Alexis added that she is happy to live in a state with access to amazing resources like NVRD and bipartisan education.
“Minnesota is a great place to get involved in politics,” she said, “and it’s never too early or too late become a more engaged voter!”

About National Voter Registration Day¹
National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. It has quickly gained momentum since it was first observed in 2012, with more than 5 million voters registered to vote on the holiday to date.
Celebrated every September, National Voter Registration Day involves volunteers and organizations from all over the country hitting the streets in a single day of coordinated field, technology, and media efforts.
According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Every year, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register.
National Voter Registration Day efforts are designed to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to vote, creating broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.
The holiday is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), and the National Association of Election Officials (The Election Center).
