The Administrative Support department at Dakota County Technical College is offering a new 18-credit Microsoft Office Applications Management certificate. Amy Evanson, administrative support faculty at DCTC, reported that the new certificate is a great way for students to increase their knowledge of Microsoft 365 and earn a college credential at the same time.

“If you’re looking to train quickly and head directly into the workplace, this certificate provides a well-rounded curriculum on Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, and Excel. If you’re already employed, the certificate is a great way to help you enhance your productivity on the job through more efficient use of these applications.”

Amy added that most organizations worldwide use Microsoft Office applications. Career fields requiring knowledge of Microsoft products include sales, marketing, accounting, advertising, research and development, project management, office administration, manufacturing, logistics, business, transportation, communications, and many more. Earning industry-recognized Microsoft Office Certification will give you the skills you need to advance your career.

2023–2024 Required Courses for the 18-Credit Certificate

FIRST YEAR: Fall Semester

ADMS 1018: Basic Computer Applications: 3 credits

This course covers basic information on the history of computers, computer hardware, and desktop application software. You’ll learn the fundamentals of word processing (Word), spreadsheet (Excel), database (Access), and presentation applications (PowerPoint). You’ll also be introduced to use of basic file management and the internet.

ADMS 1260: Certification Basics – Microsoft Word: 3 credits

This course covers training to prepare you to take the Microsoft Office Specialist Exam for Word.

This course covers training to prepare you to take the Microsoft Office Specialist Exam for Excel.

FIRST YEAR: Spring Semester

ADMS 1040: Integrated Office Skills: 3 credits

This course is designed to integrate and reinforce the skills and knowledge you learned in previous courses in the program. Project emphasis will develop your awareness of workflow, chain of command, and creation/integration of office documents. The use of electronic tools and the integration of documents created in various Microsoft Office Suite programs is the primary focus of this course.
