ID alumna Kimberly Scanlon and Julie Tuerk of Vela Creative design condo garage
The Dakota County Technical College Foundation, Eagan Condo Garages, and Langer Construction co-hosted a recognition event Thursday evening, September 22, 2022, on location in Eagan, Minnesota. The event celebrated the design work of Kimberly Scanlon and Julie Tuerk of Vela Creative. Kimberly and Julie are alumna of the Interior Design program at DCTC. They recently completed design work on a condo garage project at Eagan Condo Garages.
Guests included Architectural Technology (ArchTech) and Interior Design (ID) students and graduates, DCTC employees, foundation board members, donors, and community partners. Architectural Technology was one of three inaugural programs DCTC offered when the college first opened its doors in 1970. The Interior Design program started a year later in 1971. In fall semester 2022, more than 70 students are enrolled in both DCTC programs.
Students in these Construction & Manufacturing department academic programs are regularly sought out by companies in the interior design and construction industries. Program faculty, Anne Painter and Leah Gruehl, receive two to three emails weekly from employers seeking talented interns as well as contact information for recent graduates.
More about the DCTC Foundation…
Giving Makes a Difference
Established in 1983 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the DCTC Foundation functions as an avenue for gifts and grants that benefit the college and our students. By providing resources to students, the college and our programs, the Foundation upholds the DCTC mission, which is Education for Employment.
Governed by a board of directors with up to 18 members, the Foundation has generated more than $3.2 million in financial assistance for students while building a general endowment fund and establishing private endowment funds.
The Foundation has also received in-kind donations for equipment, tools, and supplies used in many DCTC programs.
Students pursuing higher education face mounting financial challenges. During a typical year, the Foundation provides financial support to more than 500 DCTC students, helping them pay for tuition, books, transportation and unanticipated expenses.
Your contributions—whether as a friend of the college, an alumnus or alumna, or business or company—give students the chance to become self-sufficient by allowing them to further their education and start a career. Every gift and grant makes a world of difference.

More about the event…
Kim Shaff, executive director of foundations and community relations for DCTC and Inver Hills Community College, reported that Stacy and Larry Koland, owners of the Eagan Condo Garages, along with Langer Construction co-hosted and enthusiastically supported the event, which was held to inspire current students by taking them behind the scenes of a project worksite. The event also celebrated the outstanding design skills of Kimberly and Julie.
“This was a fantastic event where we were able to highlight and celebrate the amazing work of our DCTC graduates in a unique space,” Kim said. “The event gave our students real-life exposure to what is possible when you approach a design project with an open mind. Who would have thought you could make a ‘garage’ look so beautiful? We are so grateful for community partners who open their doors to enhance the education of our students and facilitate industry connections with our alumni.”
Kim added that Julie Tuerk spoke with guests about her personal experience at DCTC, having enrolled at the college after several years in the workforce. Julie described how the Vela Creative team played a key role in designing the Eagan Condo Garages model. Vela Creative is in the process of designing a second condo garage on the property.
“A third sponsor, Kevin Rolfes with KRDesign, provided a $250 scholarship for Staci Osborne, an interior design student who attended the event,” said Amy Eppen, DCTC Foundation development director. “Our foundation along with ID and ArchTech students, graduates, and faculty wish to thank Eagan Condo Garages, Langer Construction, and KRDesign for supporting technical education.”
