Inver Hills physical education instructor offering weekly sessions via Zoom
Christine Petrich, physical education faculty at Inver Hills Community College, is offering chair yoga and relaxation exercises once a week via Zoom for faculty and staff at Dakota County Technical College and Inver Hills.
“This came about after using chair yoga as my teaching demonstration during the job interview for the UFT [unlimited full-time] position in physical education at Inver Hills [see below],” Christine said. “This wasn’t my original plan—I had planned to teach an actual yoga class, but since we were unable to meet in person, I modified my plan to work with Zoom.”
After she did the teaching demo, Christine could see that the search committee members seemed more relaxed, and someone mentioned she should do this with the rest of the faculty and staff.
“I decided that for the rest of spring semester, I would offer a weekly, 10-minute chair yoga and relaxation session for faculty and staff,” Christine reported. “It’s my way of giving back to the college community that has given me so much! It may seem like a little thing, but taking a few minutes out of our day to take deep breaths, stretch and move can make a huge difference for our bodies and minds.”
Christine added that the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus has created a high-stress environment for many people in our campus communities.
“Offering a little self-care activity is something I am happy to provide,” she said. “It means a lot to me that I can share something simple and practical with my fellow faculty and staff!”
