DCTC Partnering with Chart Industries

$300,000 MJSP grant provides advanced welding training to 351 employees

Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) is partnering with Chart Industries, in New Prague, Minnesota, through a $300,000 Minnesota Job Skills Partnership (MJSP) training grant. Chart is a leading global manufacturer of standard and custom-engineered products and systems for a wide variety of cryogenic and heat-transfer applications. The MJSP program works strategically with businesses and educational institutions to train or retrain workers, expand work opportunities and keep high-quality jobs in the state.

A grant-signing ceremony was held Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at the Scott County Sheriff’s Office in Shakopee, Minnesota. Representatives from Chart and the Minnesota Training Connection (MTC), a training-solution partnership between DCTC and Inver Hills Community College, were present for the event.

Chad Sheets, DCTC dean of continuing education and customized training, and Joe Brinkman, Chart vice president of bulk gas products, did the signing honors.

Steve Lommen, an MTC project and grant manager, worked with Chart and MJSP to facilitate the grant and develop the project’s training curriculum.

“DCTC is partnering with Chart to develop and deliver training to three-hundred and fifty-one employees,” said Lommen. “That includes one hundred new hires over the project period. Training will be offered onsite at Chart’s New Prague facility as well as on the DCTC main campus in Rosemount, Minnesota.”

Lommen noted that the training curriculum will provide entry-level and advanced training in welding processes specifically used at Chart.

“This project will deliver the skills development and workforce preparation Chart needs to achieve immediate and long-term goals,” Lommen added. “Completion of training for existing and new employees will expand their skills while providing advancement opportunities at Chart. The project allows the college to enhance its ability to develop customized training curricula in the mechatronics and welding fields.”
