Blue Knights roll past Gogebic Samsons 82–62
DCTC basketball hosted Gogebic Community College (19–10) in an NJCAA Division II Region 13 postseason game Wednesday, March 1, 2017. The Blue Knights defeated the Samsons 82-62. The game was played in the Activities building on the Inver Grove Heights campus of Inver Hills Community College.
The win advances DCTC (12–14) to the Region 13 Championship vs the United Tribes Technical College Thunderbirds (16–13) from Bismarck, North Dakota. The Blue Knights are hosting the game Sunday, March 5, at 2 p.m. at the Inver Hills gym. The winner will advance to the NJCAA District 7 Championship against the Region 9 champion, either Southeast Community College (17–13) or Central Community College (17–13), both schools out of Nebraska. The District 7 champion will head to the Mary Miller Center in Danville, Illinois, to compete in the NJCAA DII Men’s Basketball Championship March 21–25, 2017.
DCTC led Gogebic 42–31 at halftime. The final score marked the second time the Blue Knights beat the Samsons this season—the earlier 66–61 victory a home game on Jan. 28. The Knights also lost to Gogebic 70–60 in a Feb. 11 away game.
Joey Johnson, 6-3 freshman forward, led DCTC in scoring with 19 points. Johnson went 8 for 12 from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds. Adreon Wadlington, 6-3 freshman guard, scored 15 points along with seven assists and five steals. Cole Murray, 6-8 freshman post, led the team with 11 rebounds, 10 on the defensive boards.
Head Coach Kelly Boe reported that UTTC edged by Dakota College at Bottineau 91–89 to reach the championship game. DCTC faced Dakota College Dec. 10 in an 87–68 loss on the road. DCTC basketball took home the program’s first Region 13 Championship in 2016, beating Dakota 104–98.
“We are thrilled about the opportunity to host this year’s Region 13 Championship game,” Coach Boe said. “United Tribes is a high-scoring team and this should be an exciting game.”
