John Mitchell in Dakota Room Feb. 22, 2017 • 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
The Campus Lions Club at Dakota County Technical College is hosting guest speaker John Mitchell, a former U.S. Army Ranger who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mitchell represents H.O.O.A.H., or Helping Out Our American Heroes. The presentation takes place Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017, on the college’s main campus in Rosemount, Minnesota.
Mitchell’s presentation is called “The Things They Carry: Returning Veterans’ Challenges” and will focus on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The presentation is preceded at 12:30 p.m. by a 22 Push-Up Challenge for Veterans Suicide Awareness, also in the Dakota Room.
Lions, students, staff and faculty are welcome to attempt performing 22 push-ups to call attention to the 22 veteran suicides that happen every day. More than 120 people are expected to accept the challenge.
Brett Kolles, English faculty and Campus Lions Club faculty co-advisor, reported that John Mitchell spoke at the 2017 Lions District 5M-6 Mid-Winter Convention in January in Bloomington, Minnesota.
“We are pleased to have John visit the college,” Kolles said. “He is an eloquent and passionate speaker. DCTC Lions Club President Brandy Boyer invited him—and John jumped at the opportunity to serve and share a message of hope and help. We welcome all Lions and veterans everywhere to attend. District 5M-6 Governor Pat Finley generously volunteered to provide complimentary pizza for attendees. ”
