Camp aims to engage teenage girls in technical fields through hands-on learning
Starting Monday, 100 teenage girls will flock to Dakota County Technical College for TXT2016. The camp, also known as Teens eXperiencing Technical Education, offers girls in grades 5th through 7th the opportunity to experience technical vocations through hands-on learning.
The camp will be held July 25th – 28th. Organizer Scott Determan said the girls will have the opportunity to explore careers they may not have considered like computer programming, robotics or automotive technology.
“In the past the girls have gotten to drive some of the construction equipment, work on auto body repairs, written programs, played with robots and more!” said Determan.
In its sixth year, TXT camps have helped introduce hundreds of girls to technical education. Areas explored as part of the camp include transportation, technology, industrial, graphic design, health, science and business programs.
Determan said a lot of opportunities exist for young women in technical fields, they just need to know they are out there. This camp provides that exposure.
“We hope the girls come and have a good time and try some things they would never have even considered doing for a career,” said Determan.
