Republic Services awarded Brandon Benson a $1,000 scholarship
Dakota County Technical College student Brandon Benson received the Mike Fritzen Scholarship. On April 27, representatives from Republic Services presented a check of $1,000 to Benson, a second year Heavy Duty Truck Technology student.
“It’s special to have someone you don’t know give you money to succeed,” said Benson.
Instructor Ken Klassen said the top three students in the Heavy Duty Truck Technology program are eligible to compete for the Mike Fritzen Scholarship. Each writes an essay declaring why they should receive the scholarship. The essay is then sent through Fritzen’s former employer Republic Services to the family of Mike Fritzen, who makes the decision.
Mike Fritzen was a past DCTC student who went on to become an industry leader. Throughout his career, Fritzen supported the Heavy Duty Truck Technology program as an active advisory member. He ended his career with Republic Services.
Republic Services is recycling and waste disposal company. The company serves residential, municipal, commercial and industrial customers nationwide.
Benson, who works full-time for CHS, will graduate in a few weeks. He said the money will help him pay for school and tools. Honored to receive the scholarship, Benson thanked the Fritzen family for supporting his education.
“It’s nice to have support from people in the industry,” said Benson.
