Blue Knights beat Gogebic in triple overtime

The Blue Knights men’s basketball team at Dakota County Technical College will host the program’s first NJCAA Region 13 championship game Sunday, March, 1, 2015, at 1 p.m. at The Salvation Army in St. Paul. DCTC advanced to the championship by beating the Gogebic Community College Samsons 91–84 in the regional tournament semifinals Wednesday evening, Feb. 25, also at The Sal. DCTC’s opponent in the finals is Dakota College at Bottineau.

The Blue Knights led the Samsons the entire game until a Gogebic player sank a shot to tie the score with two-tenths of a second left on the clock. DCTC needed three overtime periods to earn the victory. For the stats on the Gogebic game, visit Go Blue Knights box score.

DCTC hosted the semifinal game by besting Gogebic twice during the regular season. Men’s basketball’s only regional playoff win came during the program’s  inaugural season three years ago. The team lost to Bismarck State College in the finals. Sunday’s game represents the 10th time a DCTC sports team has competed in a regional championship game.

The Blue Knights are 23–7 and on track to post the team’s best all-time season record. In his second season as head coach, Ben Davis guided the team to 12 straight wins through December and January. The team won 18 games starting in early December with only three losses.

DCTC will host the Dakota College at Bottineau Lumberjacks (16–15) Sunday, March 1, at 1 p.m. at The Salvation Army in St. Paul. Bottineau advanced to the finals by defeating United Tribes Technical College 85–76 Wednesday night in Bismarck, North Dakota. The winner of Sunday’s championship will host a one-game district playoff against the champion from NJCAA Region 9 (Nebraska, Montana and Wyoming). That game is scheduled for Sunday, March 8, with the winner advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament in Danville, Illinois, March 17–21.
