Blue Knights lose to ICCC 0–1
The DCTC Blue Knights men’s soccer team lost in the first round of the 2010 NJCAA Region XI Men’s Soccer Tournament, falling 0–1 to the Iowa Central Community College Tritons Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. DCTC was the sixth seed in the tourney; ICCC is the third seed. Play was hindered by sleet and strong winds. The winning goal came with eight minutes left in the second half.
“We had our chances,” said Head Coach Cam Stoltz, who pointed to shots that hit the post and missed an open net. “This was the rubber match of the 2010 series between DCTC and Iowa Central. We beat them 1–0 in Iowa and then they beat us 2–0 on our home field.”
Stoltz reported that the Knights had an up-and-down season highlighted by an upset win over the Illinois Central College Cougars, which at the time were ranked #6 in the NJCAA Men’s Soccer Division I Top 15 National Poll. DCTC finished the year at 9–10 overall and 5–9 in the ICCAC, competing with nine sophomores and 19 freshmen.
Freshman Forward/Midfielder Ryan Schlittler led the team with seven goals and five assists. Freshman Midfielder Chester Saba had six goals and two assists. Sophomore Fullback Korbin Anglin had five goals and two assists. Freshmen Isak Gutu, forward, and Hugo Cardoza, midfielder, each had three goals and five assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Derek Randall had 58 saves and a .773 save percentage. Sophomore goalkeeper Spencer Van Behren had 41 saves and .774 save percentage.
The defending Region XI champs, the Tritons lost 0–2 in the 2010 tourney’s second round to the #2 seed, the North Iowa Area Community College Trojans, Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines, Iowa.
