Men’s Soccer Upsets #6 Illinois Central

Blue Knights 9–8 overall as of Oct. 19, 2010

The Blue Knights men’s soccer team recorded the biggest win in the program’s history by defeating the Illinois Central College Cougars 2–1 Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at the Ames Soccer Complex on the DCTC Rosemount campus. The Cougars are ranked #6 in the latest NJCAA Men’s Soccer Division I Top 15 National Poll. The win put the Knights at 9–8 going into their away game against the Indian Hills Community College Warriors Wednesday, Oct. 20. The Knights are 5–8 in the ICCAC, placing the team seventh in the conference.

“The win against Illinois Central could not have come at a better time,” said Head Coach Cam Stoltz. “We are set to carry the momentum from that victory into the regional playoffs.”

Matt Jarman (11)

Stoltz noted that Matt Jarman, a freshman forward from Caerphilly, Wales, will be back in time for the NJCAA Region XI tournament after missing 11 games due to an ankle injury. “Matt is one of our best strikers,” he said. “He has experience playing at the Welsh International level.”

Ryan Schlittler (16)

Freshman Ryan Schlittler leads the team with seven goals and is tied with freshmen, Isak Gutu and Hugo Cardoza, with five assists. After Jarman’s injury, Schlittler stepped up from midfielder to the forward position, making the transition work at a critical time in the season. Chester Saba, a freshman midfielder from Apple Valley, Minn., is second on the team in goals with six.

“Right now, we will probably be on the road as the fourth or sixth seed for the regional quarterfinal,”  said Stoltz, who added that his team is experiencing the wear and tear typical at the end of the season. “We’ve struggled with consistency over the year, but after big wins against Iowa Central and Illinois Central, we are heading into the playoffs with a great attitude.”

The Knights beat the ICCC Tritons 1–0 in double overtime at Blue Knights Vuvuzelas Night, Wednesday, Oct. 8, at home when Isak Gutu scored with two minutes left in the second OT period with assists from Dylan Urban and Chester Saba.

The first round of the NJCAA Region XI Men’s Soccer Tournament takes place Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. Teams and venues to be determined.
