Knights battle back to split against Hamline JV
DCTC fastpitch softball dropped two games, 2–12 and 2–19, to the Iowa Lakes Community College Lakers Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Erickson Park in Rosemount, Minn.
“Playing Kirkwood and Iowa Lakes back to back is the most difficult stretch that we have this year,” said Head Coach Aaron Vail. The Knights lost to the Kirkwood Community College Eagles April 17 at home, 0–8 and 4–20 (see Blue Knights 14–17 as of April 22, 2010). “Lakes proved to be worthy of their #11 national ranking,” Vail added. “In game one, Tara Kimberly threw the ball well the first time through the order and hit a home run for our only score of the game. In game two, Lakes jumped on us early and held us off through the fifth inning when we scratched two runs off of them.”
The Knights next traveled to St. Paul April 23 to face Hamline University’s fastpitch JV squad in a doubleheader, losing the first game 8–13, but coming back to win the second 7–2.
“Having already split with Hamline’s JV program this year, we knew what to expect,” Vail reported. “We jumped out to a 7–0 lead after the first three innings. The wheels fell off after that as we gave up eight runs in one inning with some of the worst defense we had played all year. We never regained the lead.”
Vail went on to say that the this proved to be one of the most disappointing losses for the Knights this season. “We knew we were the superior team and we gave up a seven-run lead. In game two, our bats came back alive for seven more runs, however, this time, our pitching and defense were there in full force. It was nice to have another win where we played almost to our full capacity and more importantly, played with some swagger.”
