Team goes 7–3 on spring road trip against upscale competition
The DCTC Blue Knights baseball team is back home after a successful showing at the 2010 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in early March. The Knights scored 86 runs in the first 10 games of the season, putting together seven wins against three losses against tough teams, including a split vs. the Elgin Community College Spartans, an elite squad from Elgin, Ill., that has gone to the NJCAA World Series five out of the last six years. Knights pitching and fielding also got the job done on the road.
“We played up throughout the tournament,” Head Coach Randy Briesacher said. “This year we have very well-rounded team and are solid at every position.”
Briesacher pointed to a number of players who have made impressive contributions thus far this season.
- Sophomore Joe Lucas, shortstop and right-handed pitcher, has been strong on the mound and at the plate. He’s 1–0 as a pitcher with a 2.25 ERA and 7 strikeouts. He’s also batting .480 with 12 hits, including two home runs, 10 RBIs and 12 runs scored.
- Freshman Nate Murphy, second base, is the batting average leader at .565 with 13 hits, including two doubles, and 11 RBIs.
- Sophomore Sean Toomey, catcher, is hitting .357 with 10 hits, including four doubles, one triple and two home runs. Third baseman Jon Dabney plus outfielders Kevin Williams and Zack Clark are all hitting over .300 with Dabney and Williams each knocking in a team-leading 11 RBIs.
- Freshman left-hander Derek Bergstrom is crushing everything on the mound, standing at 2–0 with a dazzling 0.82 ERA combined with 18 strikeouts.
The Knights are on the road through April 14, playing in Iowa, Wisconsin and at the Minnesota Crossover hosted by the Riverland Community College Blue Devils, an archrival. The team returns home Saturday, April 17, to play a doubleheader against the Minnesota West Community and Technical College Blue Jays at Alimagnet Park in Burnsville, Minn.
