Women’s Soccer Takes Road Trip to Jayhawk Country

Posts losses to Barton and Butler while looking to future with 14 new players

On Saturday, Aug. 29, in Great Bend, Kan., the DCTC Blue Knights women’s soccer team opened the 2009–2010 season with a 0–4 loss to the Barton County Community College Cougars during the Barton County Community College Tournament. With strong winds gusting in Great Bend Stadium, the Knights gave up two goals in each half to last year’s Jayhawk Conference champions.

The following day, Sunday, Aug. 30, the women faced Butler Community College, losing 1–4 to the Grizzlies, who are ranked #14 nationally in the most recent NJCAA Div. 1 women’s soccer poll. DCTC gave up an early goal only to muster up continued possessions and an eventual equalizer when Julie Rath scored from 30 yards out. The Knights contained the Grizzlies through most of the game only to give up three late goals.

“We had a good look at our 16 healthy players,” said Head Coach Cam Stoltz. “We played two different goalkeepers, Celeste Lungren-Laws on Saturday and Breann Fitzgerald on Sunday. We have focused on two different systems of play in the preseason and our first two games. Now we need to focus on our strengths as well as the depth of our roster and start winning games.”
