Women’s Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Iowa Central

Lady Tritons defeat DCTC with last-minute goal

DCTC freshman Katie Lucca (Lakeville South HS) scored an early goal against the Iowa Central Community College Lady Tritons on an assist from sophomore Colette Montgomery (McAuly HS). The Blue Knights held that one-goal lead for the first 70 minutes of the game, which was played at Fort Dodge, Iowa.

The Knights yielded a goal when they failed to clear a corner kick. DCTC came close to victory late when freshman Alicia Martinez (Barron HS) banged a 40-yard free kick off the cross bar and the Knights nearly cleaned up on the rebound.

Iowa Central counterattacked with a last-minute score to take the game from the gritty Knights.

DCTC falls to 3-6 overall while Iowa Central improves to 5-3-1. The Lady Tritons sit in second place in the conference and area perennial regional contender. The DCTC women have not beaten Iowa Central since 2004. They will get a chance at payback on Oct. 24 in the final game of the season at Rose Park in Burnsville. Most scenarios find the two teams meeting again in the regional tournament.

The Lady Knights play their next home game on Thursday, Sept. 25, against the Indian Hills Community College Warriors. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
