The DCTC Baseball team will kick off their season on their annual spring trip to Florida this week. The Blue Knights are coming off a 2006 season in which they finished with a 23-17 overall record and a 4th place finish in the MCCC. They also advanced on to regional play for the first time in the program’s short history. 2007 begins with another first as DCTC garnered it’s first ever NJCAA national ranking; preseason 17th (view the complete poll). The first game for the Blue Knights will be in Florida on Saturday, March 10th at 10:00 am vs. Itasca.
The 2007 pitching staff looks to be deep, as the Blue Knights welcome several new faces. Leading the rotation will be 2005 ace Mike Spurling, returning from a one-year absence due to an arm injury. Following Spurling in battle for rotation spots will be Dave Geiger (medical red shirt in 2006), Joe Foley (Hibbing CC transfer), Justing Kohls, Ryan Kraft (Dakota State transfer), Ryan Heyer, Jared Thies (South Dakota State transfer), and Mike Siegfried. Closing out the games during the beginning of the season will be Dillon Powell, with Ben Schroeder, Travis, Borowicz, and Will Langenenks used as relief.
The lone returning infielder from the 2006 season is Jared Powell. Powell will play first base and anchor the middle of the lineup. Chase Brown (Phoenix CC transfer) will be up the middle at shortstop, with Matt Enright at second base. Brad Beskau and Brad Rosendahl will man third base, and Tyler Jendro, Adam Stuessel, and Billy Cook will also vie for infield playing time.
Returning in left field will be Derek Albers, who will be joined by several players hoping to earn a starting spot in the other two positions. D. Powell and Beskau will likely fill right field, with Ryan Valdez or D. Powell in center field. Other players pushing for time are returnees Ben Neibaur and Rick Otto, along with first-year players Cook and Schroeder.
Opening the season with shared time in the catching position will be Mick Dudero and first-year player Spencer Braun. Braun will also likely see time in right field, or possibly first base.
“I am really looking forward to getting started and playing some games,” said DCTC Head Baseball Coach Tim Huber. “The pitching staff is by far the best we have had. We have a lot of depth and some quality arms ” I am counting on these guys to lead us this year. We should also be strong up the middle and we have several guys capable of filling in at different spots defensively”.
The Blue Knights first action at home will take place at the Metrodome vs. Iowa Central on March 28. Be sure to check back with www.goblueknights.com for all the latest scores and highlights.
