The DCTC Blue Knights baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader on April 2 against Mesabi Range Community College, winning 9-8 in an extra-innings contest, and losing a hard-fought contest 11-6.
Highlights for the game included Charles Stene, who went 4 for 6 on the day. First-year coach Tim Huber said the Knights battled back in the second game, digging their way out of a 6-0 hole to win 9-8.
On the mound in the second game, Tony Rome and Alex Miller combined to give up only two hits, one run, and seven strikeouts in six innings of relief.
The Knights traveled north on April 4 to take on the Macalester JV squad in St. Paul. While losing 10-6, several DCTC players turned in strong performances.
Keith Engstrand recorded two RBI, Alex Miller hit two doubles, and Ben Neibaur also had two hits. Stene went 1-2 for the day, adding to his team-leading .538 average. Stene has connected for at least one hit in eight straight games.
“Control has killed us the last four games,” Huber said. “Our pitchers have walked or hit batters 9, 11, 11, and 8 times in the last 4 games. This has led to three losses in four games.” Next up are games this weekend in Willmar against Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Hibbing Community College, Ridgewater Community College.
