The DCTC Blue Knights opened their men’s and women’s soccer seasons on Saturday in Burnsville. The first match of the year for the men was also the first game in program history.
The Iowa Western Community College squad from Council Bluffs, Iowa was also playing in its program’s inaugural match, and provided a challenge to the Blue Knights, with the women’s team losing 4-1 and the men’s team falling 4-2.
DCTC played a fast-paced game with opportunities to take charge in the first half. However, it was Iowa Central who capitalized first by scoring in the 18th minute. DCTC would continue to exchange chances with IWCC talking a second goal with 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Blue Knights then substituted Freshman Charles Ohaegbulem (Aba, Nigeria) at the striker position in an effort to get in past IHCC’s fullback line. Ohaegbulem had success with five minutes remaining in the first half by dribbling past the IWCC center back who then took Ohaegbulem down with a trip.
An ensuing penalty kick by DCTC’s Jon Kima made the halftime score 2-1 Iowa Central. The second half saw IWCC jump out by two goals before Casey Holm (Freshman Hudson WI) took a dribble of his own through the IWCC area and scored from 17 yards straight out.
That would be the end of DCTC’s scoring. IWCC added a fourth goal late in the game to finish with a 4-2 win. The DCTC men play next on Wednesday (Sept. 1, vs Macalaster College JV at Johnny Cake Ridge Park Soccer Complex in Apple Valley).
The 15th ranked women were also upset in their bid to win the first match of the year. After absorbing a first-half goal by IWCC, Sheena Lien (Apple Valley) responded for the Blue Knights early in the second half by scoring on a long driven shot from 30 yards which tied the match at one goal each. IWCC’s wouldscore 3 more goals late in the game to win 4-1.
The next action for the Blue Knights women is Sunday, Sept. 5 when they host Scott Community College of Iowa. The game is part of this weekend’s Blue Knights Kickoff Classic soccer tournament at Rich Valley Soccer Complex in Inver Grove Heights.
