Last-minute Goal Lifts DCTC Over Ninth-ranked Iowa Central

The DCTC Blue Knights soccer team played its first home game and did not disappoint the crowd of 134 soccer fans in attendance, winning 3-2 and remaining undefeated in four games.

Rachel Jones (Round Rock, TX) scored DCTC’s third and final goal in the 89th minute (out of 90) to put the Blue Knights up for good 3-2. The game was the first time DCTC had to come from behind and was won over a team that made the NJCAA National Tournament last fall and came in ranked ninth in the nation.

Becca Noonan (Brooklyn Park) put the home team on the board first to give DCTC a 1-0 halftime lead. The Tritons of Iowa Central stormed out after the break and scored an equalizer and go-ahead goal in the first seven minutes of the second half. DCTC responded to equalize at 2-2 when Gina Heggelman (Minnetonka) scored in the 57th minute after following up on a Sheena Lien (Apple Valley) shot. Hillary Keefer (Eagan) earned the two other assists while Mandy Stockton (Hastings) earned her third win of her career while yielding two goals and making 12 saves on the day.

The Blue Knights away game at Macalester scheduled for Sept. 8 was postponed for academic class conflicts and will be made up later in the season. DCTC will practice on Monday in preparation for Friday’s home match.

Note: The Blue Knights will play as scheduled on Friday night (7 p.m. in Apple Valley) against Viterbo University. Schoolcraft College (MI) was the original opponent, but pulled out late last week due to budget and travel issues. Viterbo was scheduled to play Schoolcraft the next day and agreed to fill in for Schoolcraft.
