The Dakota County Technical College Blue Knights women’s soccer team was victorious in its inaugural game Tuesday night. Playing Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, the team came away with an impressive 4-0 win.
Scoring for the Blue Knights came early when Sheena Lien (Apple Valley) drew a penalty kick foul in the fourth minute. Lien took and succeeded the penalty kick scoring DCTC’s first-ever goal. Freshman fullback Megan Peterson (Woodbury) then scored in the 26th minute when she took advantage of a loose ball 25 yards out from goal. Her one-time shot was sent past Bethany’s goalkeeper Melissa Peyman.
The Blue Knights capped off the win when Becca Noonan (Brooklyn Park) scored two second-half goals in the 48th and 85th minutes. Assists on the third and fourth goals went to Hillary Keefer (Eagan) and Kendahl Link (Farmington).
DCTC out shot the Vikings of Bethany 21 to 5, while Gina Heggelman (Orono) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Blue Knights making three saves.
The Blue Knights will face Bethany twice more this season, starting with a home game on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. and capping off the season against them in regional NJCAA competition.
DCTC next travels to Illinois to take on the College of DuPage on Saturday in Naperville and Rock Valley College in Rockford (Rockford, Ill.). The Blue Knights then play at Rochester Technical and Community College on Sept. 4 before hosting its first home game on Friday, Sept. 5 against nationally ranked Iowa Central at 4 p.m. DCTC plays its home games at Johnny Cake Ridge Park in Apple Valley.
