Open-ended, child-initiated play is crucial for young children. That being said, teachers can (and should) ask thought-provoking questions and make slight suggestions to scaffold the child’s thought process during play to extend the learning. Check out THIS LINK for an example of this. Notice how the teacher allows the children to problem-solve a solution. Being bored or not knowing how at first is not a bad thing!
