Consumer Reports states that you should retire a car seat when:

• It has passed the expiration date
• It has been in a  crash
• The child has outgrown it
• It is damaged

It’s not safe to use a car seat that has any of these issues. It’s best to recycle your car seat so that there is no chance that others will find the seat and use it.
