What should we and our children know about the people who lived here long before European settlers arrived?

With Thanksgiving approaching, we see classic images of early settlers sharing meals with Native Americans who were here long before. But what do we really know about the lives and culture of indigenous people? What are the traditions that sustain them, and what challenges do they face today that may still be a legacy of our shared history? Susan Koepplinger, executive director of the American Indian Women’s Resource Center, joins Marti & Erin for a discussion of ways you and your family can learn about and celebrate native cultures. And, drawing on a recent report on sexual trafficking and violence against women (with American Indian women particularly vulnerable to such harm), Susan also provides shocking information that should serve as a call to action to all of us.
