Jerlean Daniel and Rae Pica with Vivian Gussin Paley
This guest continues to sound the alarm that play in being pushed out of kindergarten to the detriment of the children. In this segment, Vivian offers suggestions for pushing back against the system.
Thank you for posting this, I am a director of early childhood center, and this really struck a chord with me as an educator and as a teacher. The recent push for learning standards has even made me lose site of the continuing to encourage play and so this discussion comes at such a timely matter in my eyes as the start of the new year begins. I think the key to stopping the push is to make everyone understand how we as directors can really encourage our teachers to remember that play needs to be well calculated opportunities for learning!
Mary- Yes, you hit it on the head with your sentence, “directors can really encourage our teachers to remember that play needs to be well-calculated opportunities for learning!” Often, when using well-calculated opportunities, teachers will find that, the learning standards can be reached through play. I’m glad this post was meaningful to you – the children in your life will surely benefit 🙂
