Who’s ready to wiggle and dance? This review is of the Laugh & Learn™ Dance & Play Puppy from Fisher-Price. It teaches: Baby’s 1st games • Letters • Counting 1-10 • Opposites • Greetings • Manners • Parts of the body and more! Age recommendation: 9-36 months. Retail price: $40.

Let me tell you, as with most toys these days, this puppy was securely fastened into the box with twist ties and ‘screws’. Once the puppy was loose, I was able to see how cute he was. He has a friendly smile and is very colorful. The material is nice and seems durable as well. It was great that the batteries were already in and ready to go, although Fisher-Price does recommend replacing them.

At first, I was slightly confused because his ears and paws seemed like they were buttons, but alas, they were not. What was intriguing to me was that 3 other adults also thought they were buttons, but a 22-month old child did not even attempt to push them. She seemed to instinctively know that there were only two buttons – one on each foot. She easily pushed a button and smiled with delight as the puppy ‘came to life’. At first, she patiently waited for him to finish and then slowly approached him to try pushing the button again. She seemed to enjoy learning about this cause and effect relationship she had with Puppy. He was in Try Me Mode which made his interactions short- a sample of what he does. (To get him out of Try Me Mode, simply turn him on, off and on again.) After a few minutes, she seemed to anticipate his actions and stayed close enough to immediately turn him on again by pushing buttons. At one point, she picked him up and hugged him. He stopped and said, “Uh-oh” when he tipped over. Every once in a while, Puppy’s ears moved up and down for a surprise to which she replied, “Oh!”

Positives: Look and design, promotes interaction from child, reinforces cause and effect, foot buttons are easy to push, many learning opportunities through songs, phrases, movement and games.

FYI: Motor is loud so you hear every movement, Puppy is stiff (standing position only), two sound levels: low (competes with motor) high (plenty loud).
