The Dr. Cheryl T. Chatman “Lift As We Climb” Leadership Award
Honoring Dr. Chatman’s Legacy and Empowering Black Women in Education
The ABWHE-MN is proud to announce the Dr. Cheryl T. Chatman “Lift As We Climb” Leadership Award, established to recognize outstanding Black women students pursuing higher education in Minnesota. This award honors Dr. Chatman’s lifelong commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in academia, and her unwavering dedication to the “lift as we climb” philosophy.
About the Award
Two awards of $750 each will be presented to Black women students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs at Minnesota higher education institutions.
Awardees will receive a one-year ABWHE-MN student membership, connecting them to a network of accomplished women in education.
They will be invited to participate in ABWHE-MN service projects throughout the year.
Eligibility
- Currently enrolled as a Black woman student at a higher education institution in Minnesota (in-person, hybrid, or virtual programs).
- Enrolled in an undergraduate-level (Associate’s or Bachelor’s) or graduate-level (Master’s, Ph.D., or professional degree) program.
- Enrolled part-time or full-time.
Application Materials (Due December 2nd, 2024 by 5 PM)

- 250-500 word essay addressing:
- Immediate and long-term academic and professional goals.
- How your cultural background/identity shapes your educational journey.
- A personal example demonstrating your commitment to “lifting as we climb” while pursuing your education.
- Unofficial transcript (PDF) verifying enrollment at a Minnesota higher education institution.
Selection Process
- Applications and essays will be reviewed for thoughtfulness, clarity, and understanding of the “lift as we climb” mission.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Award winners will be notified by email.
Award Recognition
- The awards will be presented in-person at an ABWHE-MN chapter meeting on January 25th, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM CST.
- Attendance at the meeting is mandatory.
