A Voyage of Tragedy: the USS Pueblo
In January 1968, the USS Pueblo sailed from Japan on what was expected to be a routine intelligence-gathering mission. Its capture by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was a serious loss for the United States. For the crew, however, the capture meant a year of tragedy and sacrifice. The Pueblo story raises national issues, but it also is a story of personal tragedies and sacrifice–and personal heroism in the most perilous situations.
