NJCAA Hall of Fame Coach brings vision and experience to new program

Jay Pivec

Jay Pivec, one of the top coaches in the history NJCAA Division III basketball, has been named head coach of the new men’s basketball team at Dakota County Technical College. Pivec is best known as the legendary head coach of the Minneapolis Community and Technical College Mavericks.

Pivec and DCTC are gearing up to launch Blue Knights men’s basketball in October 2011. The plan for now is to have the team compete as an independent at the NJCAA DII level, but having the Knights join a conference is also a possibility.

“My job at DCTC presents several similarities to when I took over an MCTC team in 1990 that had just come off an 0–21 season,” Pivec said. “I’m looking forward to building a program from scratch. Working from the ground up, we’ll be able to get our thumbprints all over this thing.”

Pivec’s thumbprint is already renowned in the realm of NJCAA DIII basketball. An eight-time Minnesota College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, he entered the MCAC Hall of Fame in 2002. During his career at MCTC, he posted a 425–115 record, leading the Mavericks to four appearances in the DIII national tournament, including two second-place finishes—the last in 2009, a tough one-point loss to Richland College, ending a 33–2 season that saw the team ranked number one in the nation for seven consecutive weeks on the NJCAA DIII poll.

That same year, Pivec was named the NJCAA Division III Coach of the Year. In 2010, he entered the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. With 452 wins under his belt, he ranks second among active DIII coaches for career victories. While at MCTC, he coached eight NJCAA First-Team All-Americans, a feat unmatched by any other DIII program in the U.S.

“Right from the start at DCTC, it will be very important to prove to the community that our players are both serious students and ready to play at the highest level,” said Pivec, who will be focusing a good share of his recruiting energy in the South Metro, building on already strong relationships with high school coaches in Rosemount, Apple Valley, Burnsville, Lakeville, Eagan, Farmington, Hastings and other cities in the area. “One of the primary goals of our program will be to guide our students on to four-year colleges and universities where they can continue their academic and athletic careers. DCTC is the beginning, not the end—and that’s what will separate us from the pack.”

“I’m looking forward to building a program from scratch. Working from the ground up, we’ll be able to get our thumbprints all over this thing.”

Two out of three of Pivec’s players at MCTC went on to play basketball at four-year institutions with two out of three of the transfers earning bachelor’s degrees. Cam Stoltz, the athletic coordinator at DCTC, echoes Pivec’s dedication to the future success of DCTC student-athletes.

“Hiring Jay to lead our new basketball program was the obvious choice,” Stoltz said. “He has an unsurpassed track record of mentoring his players and pointing them in the right direction. He is famous for giving opportunities to players while preparing them for the highest levels of college basketball and life. He also knows how to field championship-caliber teams.”

Stoltz went on to say that taking the step to start a men’s basketball program at DCTC fits perfectly with the strategic plan of an athletic department with five other sports—women and men’s soccer, fastpitch softball and women’s volleyball.

“Basketball is a paramount sport when it comes to intercollegiate athletics,” he said. “With Jay Pivec at the helm, we are on course to make our new basketball program a boon to our students, our surrounding communities, DCTC athletics and the college as a whole.”

Pivec reported that Ron Gates, who worked as his assistant coach for all his 20 seasons at MCTC, will be joining the Blue Knights in his former role. Pivec also expressed his wish for the college to work in partnership with area communities and other entities to pursue the construction of a multipurpose arena on the DCTC Rosemount campus that would serve not only his program, but also other sports, particularly volleyball, in addition to housing important collegiate and community functions and events.

At 22, Tom Lukken is already taking off as a professional photographer. That might seem young, but Lukken actually launched his career some 14 years ago when as an 8-year-old he received his first point-and-shoot camera. He loved the fact that he was able to freeze time and capture memories that might otherwise be forgotten.

“I have almost my entire life photographed in some way or form,” he said. “So I can literally sift through images and see everything, which is awesome. That’s what really got me hooked.”

At age 14, Lukken set his mind on the idea that he wasn’t going to spend the rest of his life working for someone else. “I will be my own boss,” he told himself—and that became his main goal. He loved art, but didn’t think he had the talent to be a painter or illustrator so he picked up his camera and took it everywhere he went, working constantly on building his skills. He took every photography class he could in high school, but had trouble finding the right photography program in college.

“Knowing your equipment in and out is huge. Because if something happens you have to know why it’s happening, not just it’s happening.”

“I went to a few other schools before coming to DCTC, but I didn’t like any of the programs,” he said. “I just wasn’t fitting in. Then I came to DCTC, met the photo instructors and absolutely loved them. They’re great guys and always there to help. I got so much instruction from the technical side and how I should be going about my business—how I needed to be looking at things in a professional manner.”

Lukken believes that he wouldn’t be running a successful business without the classes he took at DCTC and the knowledge he picked up from his instructors. “The thing about the teachers here is that they’re all photographers,” he said. “They’re still in the industry, they’re still shooting—and they all own businesses. So whenever I had questions, I would go up and talk to one of them and they were more than happy to share anything and everything they possibly could with me.”

Thomas Lukken Photography

A year and a half into earning his A.S. degree in photography, Lukken started his own business, Thomas Lukken Photography, and things just seemed to fall into place. Family and friends provided natural networking opportunities, and he used social media to its fullest extent to get his name and his work in the public eye.

“I have a Facebook page I use just for my photography,” he said. “I want anyone and everyone to see it. I want my images out there, which is one of the best ways to generate business. I also use Twitter and I have a few blogs, not just one.”

Word of mouth has proven by far the strongest method of advertising for Lukken’s business. “I can send out two thousand mailers or tell ten people and I’ll get more business from telling ten people than I will out of two thousand mailers—and it’s a lot cheaper,” he said. “It’s pretty amazing, I guess. I’ve done the fliers, I’ve done all that, and it’s just not there compared to the instant gratification I can get from putting something online and saying, hey, check this out, check this out, and having five to six hundred people look at it within two days.”

Lukken’s first niche as a professional photographer was taking portraits of children and then families, but he’s since branched out to become an accomplished wedding photographer. He credits much of his success shooting weddings to Rick Stidger, a seasoned, award-winning master photographer who served as Lukken’s mentor during his first months on his own.

“Rick kind of just took me in and let me follow him around at weddings and shoots on the side,” Lukken said. “I learned a lot from him. He’s been in the field for 20 years. It was great just going to a wedding and not having the pressure on me to do anything but absorb what’s happening and watch the way he deals with people.”

Photo from album for a Montana wedding | Thomas Lukken Photography

Lukken pointed out that stressful situations pop up at weddings as a matter of course because so much is riding on catching one-time moments that would be lost forever if something goes wrong. Knowing exactly how to deal with inevitable problems has been one of the top benefits of working with Stidger.

“The first wedding I did by myself I was terrified,” Lukken said. “I have one chance to capture one thing. I can’t mess it up. It’s their wedding day. They’re letting you in on a very important event and you have to know what you’re doing. You have to be confident. You have to know your equipment—that’s one of biggest things I can emphasize. Knowing your equipment in and out is huge. Because if something happens you have to know why it’s happening, not just it’s happening. And that was one of the things Rick taught me.”

Landscape photography is another aspect of Lukken’s professional career and it’s something he pursues with pride because he knows that it’s much more difficult than it looks. He points to the college’s North Shore Photography workshops with DCTC Instructor Darrell Tangen as an unbeatable way to improve your nature and landscape shooting while significantly advancing your overall knowledge of digital photography.

Regarding advice for up-and-coming photographers, Lukken has this to say: “If you’re truly looking to pick up photography and be good at it, always have a camera on you because you never know when that one shot’s going to come up. When I was at DCTC, a few good buddies from school and I would go on photo adventures every other day. We’d go to the Cities, we’d go to the woods, we would just shoot and then critique each other’s work—and then we would improve on it. I would shoot from a hundred to a thousand images a day. Every time you take one image you’re getting better because you know what not to do the next time.”

Thomas Lukken Photography

He highly recommends going to school for photography, not just for the teachers and what you’ll learn from them, but from the intense competition with fellow student photographers. “There’s nothing like being in a classroom with other people and the camaraderie of pushing each other. It’s the only way I got better. Every week is a competition with each new assignment you get. Somebody would do something that would blow you away and the next week you would do anything you could to top it. You force yourself to get better that way.”

As for his chosen industry, Tom Lukken couldn’t be more pleased with the openness and cooperation shown by his peers. “The new wave, the new era is pushing photographers to band together to keep the industry strong,” he said. “I network with every other photographer I know. They’re all about helping each other out. They’re all about sharing. If you have a question and they can answer it, they will. They’re just great people.”

Former NCAA Division II National Player of the Year already recruiting for fall 2011 inaugural season

Kari Peterson

Kari Peterson, the former interim head women’s volleyball coach for the University of North Dakota, has been named head coach of the new women’s volleyball team at Dakota County Technical College. Blue Knights volleyball will compete as an independent at the NJCAA Division II level starting fall 2011.

“Starting a program is a lot like taking over a program like I’ve done in the past at UND and Valley City,” Peterson said. “At UND, we took a program that was zero and twelve in conference play and, by my third year with the team, we had set a season record for wins and won our first NCAA Division I tournament.”

Peterson is focusing on bringing in recruits that will succeed both athletically and academically—and she already has a couple lined up from volleyball camps she teaches. Scheduling games will be a big part of launching the team and Peterson plans to have the Knights compete in a number of tournaments against Division II competition in Iowa, North Dakota and Illinois. “We will also be scheduling matches against Division III teams in Minnesota,” she said.

DCTC Athletics Coordinator Cam Stoltz is glad to welcome Peterson to the Blue Knights coaching family. “Kari has an amazing resume both as a coach and as a player,” Stoltz said. “She’s the perfect choice to start a new program and is used to competing at a very high level.”

“At UND, we took a program that was zero and twelve in conference play and, by my third year with the team, we had set a season record for wins and won our first NCAA Division I tournament.”

Peterson brings plenty of coaching experience to her new position. She served as an assistant coach for the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons in 2002, the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas in 2003 and the University of North Alabama Lions in 2004. She helped the UNA Lions, one of the top collegiate volleyball programs in the U.S. and the 2003 NCAA Division II national champion, post a 24–7 overall record and win the Gulf South Conference title.

In 2005, Peterson took over as head coach of the Valley City State University Vikings. She led her team to a 10–15 season with a 7–7 record in the Dakota Athletic Conference, winning more conference games than in the four previous seasons combined.

Peterson arrived at UND in 2006, serving as assistant coach to Head Coach Katy Peterson, her twin sister, for two seasons before taking over as interim head coach in 2008. As head coach, she took her team, which was entering its second season at the NCAA Division I level, to an impressive 24–8 overall record, going 7–1 at home, 10–3 away, and 7–4 on neutral ground.

As a player, Peterson was a star setter at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. She played for the Vikings from 1997–2001, earning AVCA Division II National Player of the Year honors in 2000, the same year her team finished as runner-up in the NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball National Championship. She was also named Lutheran Brotherhood Player of the Year in 2000.

She also plans to conduct volleyball camps through DCTC and the Blue Knights.

A native of Moorhead, Minn., Peterson earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Augustana College with minors in fitness management and psychology. She is currently working on her master’s in kinesiology.

The NJCAA National Office in Colorado Springs, Colo., recently announced the recipients of the 2009–2010 NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American and Academic All-American awards. Seven student-athletes from Dakota County Technical College made the list, ranking DCTC first in NJCAA Region 13 with the most Academic All-Americans. Minnesota West Community & Technical College and Williston State College also posted seven award winners.

“NJCAA Region 13 has 28 member institutions with 18 participating in the MCAC,” said DCTC Athletic Coordinator Cam Stoltz. “Having this many Academic All-Americans at our college is made even more impressive by the fact that DCTC has the smallest athletics department for overall athletes and total number of sports when compared to other schools in the region.”

Three Auto Body Collision Technology students, Bob Vovk, Rob Clark and Mike Albers, from Dakota County Technical College were bronze medalists at the SkillsUSA Championships, which were held in Kansas City, Mo., June 20–June 25, 2010, during the 46th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference. The SkillsUSA Championships spotlighted the brainpower and expertise wielded by the top technical and career students in the U.S.

Occupying an area comparable to 16 football fields, the multimillion dollar national competition features 5,400 contestants in 91 contests supported by roughly 1,500 judges and contest organizers. DCTC sent five competitors to the championships, all having won gold medals at the 43rd Annual Minnesota SkillsUSA Championships Conference in April of this year.

According to SkillsUSA, “the philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers’ needs.”

Andy Schmitt, a student in GM ASEP placed 19th in the Automotive Service Technology contest. Tim McCluskey, an instructor in the program, was also impressed by the high-caliber competitors. “The winner of the competition scored 909 points out of 1,000—absolutely amazing! There were over 100 points between third and first place,” he said. “I think for Andy the highlight of the week was the Automotive Banquet sponsored by GM. We heard rumors all week that a very famous NASCAR driver was going to speak at the banquet. As it turned out, Rusty Wallace flew in on his own plane on Thursday. He was scheduled to do a broadcast for ESPN in Bristol, Tenn., on Friday so he had to fly out later that evening. He told the group of automotive students and faculty advisors that he was so impressed with SkillsUSA and what it stood for that he was coming back next year for the entire week.”

(Back row left to right) Gayle Tangen, John Other Medicine Jr., Ryan Engstrom, Chris Hayes, Tom Lukken, Nicole Casey, Darrell Tangen (Front row left to right): Tucker Tangen, Alicia Witherill, Heidi Bailly, Susan Raway, Melinda Voss, Ben Colvin (Not pictured) Ambria Kuchinka, Dan Wirig

The weather forecast for Gooseberry Falls State Park looked dodgy for June 10 through June 13, 2010, the dates for the North Shore Photography Workshop, an annual field trip offered by Darrell Tangen, an instructor in the Photography program at Dakota County Technical College. Soaking rains, blustery winds and numbing cold were set to present stern challenges for the photographers and their digital equipment.

Augmented by lectures, discussions and slide shows bursting with tips on metering difficult scenes and effective use of equipment along with advice for shooting waterfalls, landscapes, sunrises, wildflowers and close-ups—the latter known as macro photography, the three-day workshop was an in-the-field shootout designed to propel an intermediate photographer up the spectrum in creative, artistic and technical proficiency. The workshop concluded with a slide show and detailed critique of each student’s 10 best digital photos, a peak learning session that veterans of the workshop format praise as a highlight of the North Shore Photography experience.

Assisted by his wife, Gayle, and Tucker, the couple’s golden retriever, Darrell Tangen met with a dozen students at a Gooseberry Falls State Park picnic shelter at 8 p.m. Thursday evening to spell out the workshop’s itinerary, which included a 5 a.m. sunrise shot at Agate Beach on Lake Superior the next morning.

“The latest forecast looked rainy, breezy and chilly for the shoot,” said Tangen, “and we didn’t have much hope that the sun would break through the clouds. We were right about the weather, but as it turned out the tough conditions produced some of the best photos of the workshop.”

The rain continued into the afternoon, threatening to upend the planned shooting of Gooseberry Falls itself, which was set to cover the Upper, Middle and Lower falls, all gushing at top capacity due to the steady precipitation. Outfitted in rain gear and protecting expensive digital cameras and lenses with umbrellas and oversize plastic baggies, the photographers set out from their base camp at the Lakeview Shelter for the park’s visitor center and the uneven, now rain-slicked rocks that shape the Gooseberry River. Grappling with tricky meter readings and slowing down their shutter speeds, the students set up their tripods and shot in the rain, striving to compose photos that would instantaneously convey the personality of the falls using six must-know rules:

Simplicity

Rule of Thirds

Lines

Balance

Framing

Avoiding Mergers

“The experienced photographers in our program know that they have to ‘take a trip’ around the frame in every shot they compose to make sure they have considered all the rules,” Tangen said. “Once they know the rules and understand them, they can use them creatively—or even break them—in concert with technical know-how. That’s when ordinary photographs start to become fine art.”

Thanks to a June nor’easter, the waves were crashing big on Lake Superior’s rocky shoreline. Tangen pointed out to the group that the rare storm would cause breakers to explode on the boulders at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, which was a few miles north of Gooseberry. After a huge potluck lunch plus an in-depth look at the workshop’s theme, BIS, or Background, Interest, Strong Subject, everyone donned rain gear to protect their persons and their equipment and set out for the third shoot of the day.

The next day, Saturday, began with an ideal, overcast sky, a break from the rain, and an after-breakfast visit to a lupine field in full bloom alongside Minnesota State Highway 61. With massive, spiked blossoms ranging from white to pink to deep purple, lupine are the signature color guard of the North Shore—and they usually wait until late June to open. Early lupine and other wildflowers offered the photographers numerous opportunities to strengthen their macro skills, which revolve around defining the perfect depth of field while getting as close to your subject as your lens will allow.

“One of the photos assigned for the top 10 was a shot of a wildflower blossom completely filling the frame,” Tangen said. “Cloudy weather and flower petals covered with rain droplets promised some tremendous photos. We shot in aperture priority and our job was to find f-stops that blurred out a carefully selected background while keeping as much of the subject as possible in sharp focus.”

The next shoot of the day involved more macro, this time aimed at wildflowers and ferns back at Gooseberry Falls, which was packing even more water than on Friday. The weather stayed overcast, but without rain, providing excellent conditions except for the occasional breeze that would jostle the subject and disrupt the shot. A lot more people were at the park, which added to the challenge of nailing all aspects of the BIS theme during the composition process.

“You need to control your background so that you don’t distract from your subject, which needs to stand out so that the viewer has no doubt what it is,” Tangen said. “The other key to successful photography is making sure your shots contain something of interest. You can take technically sound photographs, but if they aren’t interesting, they won’t sell.”

Saturday ended with a late-afternoon hike to Split Rock Falls, a scenic hot spot set back from Hwy. 61 on the Split Rock River. Once again ongoing rainfall had upped the water flow, making the falls larger and more striking than usual. The increase water volume also presented composition challenges, forcing students to be adventuresome in selecting locations to set up their equipment.

Sunday called for another crack at a sunrise shot, which meant arriving on the big-rock beaches of Split Rock Lighthouse State Park at 4 a.m. A weird fog rolled in— even if the sun didn’t—and provided the chance to take some unusual and mysterious shots of the historic lighthouse. The workshop concluded with Tangen presenting and critiquing each student’s 10 best photos via a slide show that lasted from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Besides the wildflower macro shot, the students were asked to include one cropped panoramic shot, which typically features a 1:3 ratio, or three times wider than high (or vice versa). Panoramic shots are emerging as top sellers in the world of commercial photography.

“Our North Shore Workshops provide one college credit and are designed to raise our students to the professional level,” Tangen said. “Even if they don’t consider themselves nature photographers, they will find their photography improving dramatically as they master the problems and obstacles that arise when shooting natural subjects. We hold long-weekend workshops in summer, fall and winter, often camping at Split Rock, Gooseberry Falls or Temperance River state parks. We are considering new areas for future workshops.”

As a 10th grader at Farmington High School in Farmington, Minn., Andrea Forte couldn’t find the motivation to hit the books. She felt directionless and graduation seemed too far away to make any sense. That all changed when she enrolled in a program called Graphic Communications at the Dakota County Secondary Technical Center in Rosemount, Minn.

“Andrea was an at-risk student,” said Trina Walter, an instructor in the program, which falls under the umbrella of Minnesota’s Career and Technical Education, or CTE. “She was in a slump and couldn’t find her passion in a traditional high school setting. Once she discovered graphic design, she blossomed and wanted to stay here all the time. She was a very capable, gifted and skilled designer—she just didn’t know it.”

“After my first term at DCALS when I saw that I got credits and A’s in all my classes, I thought, okay, I can do this.”

Walter reported that Forte soon dropped out of Farmington High School and enrolled in the Dakota County Area Learning Center, better known as DCALS, which is located on the Rosemount campus of Dakota County Technical College. Forte delved with singular focus into graphic design and also joined SkillsUSA, attending a number of leadership conferences and competitions.

“SkillsUSA made a world of difference for Andrea,” said Walter, who has taught graphic communications at the DCSTC for 25 years. “She came into our program as a shy and quiet student, but after experiencing SkillsUSA, she developed amazing confidence and leadership skills. She was soon working as an intern in charge of customer jobs in our Graphic Resource Center. She loved her job and was very good at it.”

DCALS gave Forte the chance to study and grow in a flexible learning environment. Through the support and guidance of her teachers, she was able to fully apply her natural intelligence and talent to her newfound love of graphic design.

As a senior, Forte participated in 2009 Print Day at DCTC and took third place among student competitors. “I worked on a 30-page hockey program for Apple Valley High School, an actual paying customer of the Graphic Resource Center,” she said. “It took a few months and was the biggest project I had ever worked on. Trina Walter really encouraged me to enter something in the Print Day contest so I chose the hockey program. We were listening to the person announce the awards and I didn’t realize that my name had been called until somebody tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘I think that’s you.’”

“In graphic design you come up with the answer—and there really isn’t a wrong answer.”

After graduating from DCALS in 2009 (she made her own graduation announcements), Forte enrolled at DCTC, taking full advantage of the college’s Visual Communications department. She left DCALS with nine college credits thanks to articulation agreements and was more than ready to advance her education in the graphic communications field.

“I’m a triple major,” she said, “with a strong interest in advertising. I’m looking to graduate from DCTC with three A.A.S. degrees, one in Graphic Design Technology, one in Multimedia and Web Design and one as a Marketing Design Specialist.”

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Forte serves as an 18-year-old role model for three younger brothers and one baby sister. She is proud of her accomplishments and knows that graphic design has given her the means to blaze an academic trail for her siblings.

“I’m definitely going on to get my four-year degree in graphic design,” she said, noting she is glad that she will also have a solid foundation in Web and marketing. “What I like most about graphic design is that it’s not like history or math, which have one answer and you need to find it. In graphic design you come up with the answer—and there really isn’t a wrong answer.”

Forte enjoys using her own original concepts in her graphic work, but understands that in her field collaboration is typically the way things unfold.

“I know that it’s not going to work this way, but if you could always come up with your own idea that would be awesome,” she said. “But I understand that someone else usually has an idea and you need to help strengthen that idea and make it come to life.”

As for her long-term future, Andrea Forte looks to work in the design field for a while before opening her own business. Not wanting her business to become huge, she is attracted to working on quality-intensive projects such as wedding invitations and event announcements. In the meantime, she’s throwing herself into her studies on a beeline to her future career.

“After my first term at DCALS when I saw that I got credits and A’s in all my classes, I thought, okay, I can do this,” she said. “Once I found graphic design, I knew that it was for me in less than a week—maybe not even that long.”

“Once she discovered graphic design, she blossomed and wanted to stay here all the time. She was a very capable, gifted and skilled designer—she just didn’t know it.”

On the flipside of that equation, VCOM faculty at DCTC are happy to have students as smart and teachable as Andrea Forte.

“Andrea is a thoughtful and creative designer,” said Gwen Partin, an Applied Visual Arts instructor who has engaged Forte in her classroom. “Her work is unique, and she is intelligent and inspired. Considering her level of experience, she shows a mature outlook and understanding of design.”

Several students in Office Careers programs at DCTC attended the 2010 MBEI Spring Conference, “DigiTeacherZ,” in mid-April at the ITT Technical Institute in Eden Prairie, Minn. Five students, Susan Prom, Leslie Taylor, Melody Johnson, Shanta Lall and Xiangyang Liu, reported having an exceptionally interesting time at the conference, which is hosted by Minnesota Business Educators, Inc., and provided many opportunities for learning, networking and public speaking.

Susan Prom

Susan Prom, a resident of Farmington, Minn., and a member of the All-Minnesota Academic Team, plans on attending Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota to complete a bachelor’s degree in business administration/management. “I had gone to the conference the year before so I served as a mentor for the other students,” said Prom, who graduated in 2010 with A.A.S. degrees in the Medical Adminstrative Assistant and Executive and Administrative Assistant programs as well a Medical Receptionist certificate and Medical Transcriptionist diploma.

“I found that it was a great experience to actually practice the professionalism we’ve learned in our business classes,” she added. “I really enjoyed volunteering for the conference, which brought together everything we’ve accomplished during our education.”

Leslie Taylor

Leslie Taylor is double-majoring in the Legal Administrative Assistant and Medical Administrative Assistant programs. Originally from Seattle, Wash., and married to an active-duty member of the 82nd Airborne Division, the storied U.S. Army unit based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Taylor works in the Flextime Lab in the college’s Instructional Technology Center, better known as the ITC.

“The MBEI conference serves to educate teachers about what their students need to know to be well-rounded business professionals,” she said. “Because I work in the FlexLab, I was interested in what’s new for software and I learned about program updates included in Microsoft Office 2010.”

Melody Johnson

A resident of Cannon Falls, Minn., Melody Johnson plans on graduating from the Executive and Administrative Assistant program in spring 2011. She loved all the different classes at the conference, but was especially impressed by the networking and public speaking opportunities. “I met for an hour with a job recruiter from Malt-O-Meal in Northfield,” Johnson said. “I was also surprised and pleased that they had us introduce ourselves in front of a large audience.”

Xiangyang Liu

Born in the People’s Republic of China and a former 10-year resident of Shanghai, a megalopolis of nearly 20 million people situated on the mouth of the Yangtze River in eastern mainland China, Xiangyang Liu studied to become a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine while living in her homeland. Fluent in both Mandarin and English, she also has several years experience as an executive assistant and is earning her degree in the Executive and Administrative Assistant program.

“I’m a full-time college student and I plan to go on to Saint Mary’s University to pursue my bachelor’s degree,” said Xiangyang, who met and married her American-born husband in Shanghai before moving to the U.S. “The conference was a great way to meet other students and learn about what’s happening in our field.”

Shanta Lall

Shanta Lall and her family left their birth country of Guyana for New York City nearly 20 years ago. She settled in Apple Valley, Minn., in 1995 with her husband and is now a full-time student at DCTC in the Medical Administrative Assistant and Executive and Administrative Assistant programs.

“I didn’t know what to expect from the conference,” said Lall, who explained that Guyana, located on the northern coast of South America, was once a colony of Great Britain called British Guiana, a heritage that makes English the national language. “The overall experience was great. I jotted down notes and enjoyed the chance to introduce three people to a large group.”

Three students Rachel Addison, 38, of Hastings, Minn., Harmony Tague, 19, of Rosemount, Minn., and Katrina Hanson, 20, of Lakeland, Minn., took time out for an interview and reported having a wonderful time at the show, which was held at McCormick Place and drew an estimated 35,000 visitors to roughly 700 professional exhibits.

Rachel Addison

“KBIS was very energizing,” said Rachel Addison, a working student with some 20 years of experience in the banking and insurance industries. “We drew a ton of inspiration from seeing all the different competitors showcasing their products.” With plans to graduate in 2012, Addison is looking forward to a career in commercial interior design, specifically in the realms of restaurants and casinos, working at a smaller firm where she can follow a project from beginning to end.

Harmony Tague

A 2009 graduate of Rosemount High School, Harmony Tague was particularly impressed by the focus on sustainability and green product lines at KBIS. “I liked learning about how companies are using green ideas right now in their products to help the planet,” Tague said. “Attending the show was eye-opening and allowed us to realize how fast the interior design industry is moving toward green.” Also looking to graduate in 2012 with a future in commercial design, she sees her profession as an ideal way to harness her natural creativity and love of art.

Katrina Hanson

Katrina Hanson is attracted to the practical and logical aspects of interior design. With a background in fine art, but unable to see a profitable career path in that direction, Hanson understood how she could match her strong artistic side with the high technical demands of interior design. She praised the KBIS visit as a great way to touch and see the real-life possibilities of her future profession in person and not through a computer monitor.

“We were able to interact completely with other students, designers and vendors,” said Hanson, who is open to a career in either residential or commercial design. “We were all amazed that so many awesome products are already practical, readily available, functional and cost-effective.”

This four-day program will introduce you to the world at the molecular and atomic levels, also known as nanoscale. Research at nanoscale is changing the way we view materials science, chemistry, physics and biology.

Part lecture and part hands-on labs, NanoScience Class not only covers practical examples of how nanoscience influences our lives on a daily basis, but you’ll also perform a full range of fascinating experiments and then use leading-edge instruments like atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopes to study the results of your labwork.

On Wednesday, we’ll travel to the University of Minnesota to tour the Nanofabrication Center cleanroom (wearing “bunny suits”) and visit the Characterization Facility, where you’ll observe and operate the state-of-the-science tools used to investigate nature at nanoscale.

All you’ll need for NanoScience Class is an interest in science and math plus a willingness to explore a whole new world.
