Effects Of Caffeine

Facts from an article in CMAToday Jan-Feb 2012: 80% of adults consume coffee which is a legal and widely available stimulant daily. Several studies illustrate that caffeine is not the health menace it was once thought to be. It does not increase the risk for bone loss, does not lead to higher cholesterol, or CVD, nor does it lead to cancer. Caffeine might enhance upper-body strength by enabling people to perform high-intensity exercises. Caffeine intake might also slow Alzheimer’s disease and improve cognitive function. Taking in too much of the stimulant (>600 mg daily) can cause problems such as insomnia, anxiety, restlessness, irritability, stomach upset, or faster heartbeat. By the way 6 fluid oz of brewed coffee is 100 mg, yet most of us order at least a 12 oz cup. Avoiding caffeine addiction is good; it is addictive for some people. Withdrawal symptoms can include headache, sleepiness, irritability, lethargy, constipation, depression or muscle pain or stiffness.  Finally don’t forget that there are other products that contain caffeine such as chocolate, tea, analgesics and soft drinks to name a few.
