Talented new players make a solid foundation for next season
The DCTC Blue Knights women’s soccer team finished their 2012-2013 season with an overall record of 8–11. The team plays at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I level. According to Head Soccer Coach Cam Stoltz, the Blue Knights had a tough season, playing against many top 20 ranked teams.
“Even though we were outmatched this year, we won many games against strong opponents,” said Stoltz. “At one point in the season we were 7–7, and finishing at 8–11, is a great record for playing at the NJCAA Division I level.”
In addition to their competitive schedule this season, the women’s soccer team had many new team members with only four returning players. “This was our first year we did not have a returning top goal scorer,” said Stoltz, “but we did very well, scoring 35 goals in 19 games.”
Kendra Drew, freshman defensive midfielder, of Burnsville, Minn., was the top goal scorer for the Blue Knights. She scored 16 goals and had 8 assists in 19 games. “She is one of the fastest players on the field and has an extremely bright future,” said Coach Stoltz. Freshman outside midfielder, Daniela Zavala, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., was also a top scorer for the team. She scored 11 goals and had 6 assists in 19 games.
“We had a great group of women this year and hope to have about 12 or 13 of them back next year,” said Stoltz. “I am very excited to build on this strong foundation and I’m looking forward to next season.”
